The 991 grew in every dimension and moved to electric power steering — the change that divides opinion most sharply among people who have driven both. It also introduced a seven-speed manual alongside PDK.

The 2016 facelift is the line that matters. Before it (991.1) every Carrera had a naturally aspirated flat-six; this is the last of them, which is already shaping values. After it (991.2) every Carrera runs a 3.0-litre twin-turbo, with torque far lower in the rev range and the naturally aspirated engine reserved for the GT3. On later cars specification moves price more than mileage does: Sport Chrono, PASM, rear-axle steering and the sports exhaust each shift the number, and a thin-spec car can sit unsold beside a well-optioned one at the same money.
