Porsche 964 911

The 964 kept the shape but replaced most of what sat under it: a 3.6-litre flat-six, coil springs in place of torsion bars, power steering, ABS, and the first all-wheel-drive 911 in the Carrera 4. It is the point where the 911 became usable every day without apology.

Watch the dual-mass flywheel and the engine-case oil leaks these are known for. Both are well understood and both are expensive, so a service history that addresses them is worth more than low mileage.
